Last Saturday, February 23, 2013, Mommy Mundo, in cooperation with GlaxoSmithKline, launched its disease awareness campaign tagged as P.L.A.Y.–Protection, Love & Activities for Young Children at the Playdium, Fun Ranch in Pasig City.
Mommy Mundo invited 25 of the Philippines’ top social media moms and their children for an afternoon filled with fun and information on the Pneumococcal Diseases or PDs. According to studies, roughly a million children die from PD each year and 48% of Asian parents admit that they know nothing or a little about these diseases.
Pneumococcal diseases include invasive ones also known as IPD such as meningitis, sepsis, bacteremia, and pneumonia, and other common diseases such as acute otitis media (middle ear infection).

Acute Otitis Media (AOM), more commonly known as an infection of the middle ear, causes twenty million doctor visits annually. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) it is the most common reason for antibiotic treatment in infants and young children. A fever, headache, cough, irritability, and pain in the ears are common symptoms of this disease. AOM is also highly preventable through vaccination.
Mommy Mundo’s P.L.A.Y. event was the first event that I tagged my husband along. On our way home, he told me that he enjoyed the launch as a whole because the concept was really creative. He loved the fact that the complicated medical terms and jargon were explained through play and activities.
My husband and daughter enjoyed coloring some pictures together before heading to the Playdium. Too bad I wasn’t able to take some photos since I was busy listening to the talk.
There were also some exciting games like Scavenger Hunt, Puzzles, Guess The Disease (Text Twist style). We were also asked to come up with a name for our group that is vaccine-related and we got MMR (Muscles, Moms & Rascals) :p
We really enjoyed playing the games and even if we did not win any of it, the fun of it makes us all winners!
After the games, we were treated to a sumptuous meal which everyone enjoyed. Our brains and tummies were both satisfied.
The afternoon ended, with a pledge to P.L.A.Y, a promise of all the participants to protect their health and keep on learning and with a full head of knowledge. Protection, Love, and Activities for Young Kids or P.L.A.Y. is a disease awareness raising campaign organized by Mommy Mundo in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline, a global leader in preventive healthcare.
