Make It Sweet & Personal With Made In Candy

A couple of weeks ago, I was invited by Made In Candy Philippines to visit their candy lab at Glorietta 4 in Makati. I was so excited to hit their kitchen because I’ve always enjoyed watching their crew make candies. I first learned about Made In Candy when I saw them at their first ever branch at the Rockwell Powerplant Mall.

To make things even more fun, my good friend Roxi of joined me that afternoon.

Who is Made In Candy?

The Candylab (Philippines) Inc., handling Made in Candy (MIC), first made its debut in the Philippines in the year 2012, with their first store located at the bridge way of the Powerplant Mall, Rockwell Center, Makati City. MIC was an idea born from the obsession with candies.

Made In Candy is Asia’s first independent candy kitchen. At Made in Candy, candy artisans sculpt contemporary handmade candies using methods to craft pictures and messages at the center of each candy.

Candy making is performed live to the upbeat music of the latest rock and pop artists in front of eager customers waiting to try a warm and freshly made piece. Friendly candymen continually engage customers while the hot sugar forms and is open for everyone to see, smell, and experience.

Make Your Own Candy

The moment we entered the Made In Candy kitchen, we instantly smelled sweetness all over! Roxi & I were asked as to what candy design we would like to make. I was feeling challenged that day so I decided to try doing the rainbow design in Mixed Berries flavor.

First off, the Candy Chefs presented us the pattern and gave us some instructions before making our Rainbow Mixed Berries Candies.

Did you know that the Candy Chefs of MIC need to wear two layers of gloves when they make candies? You’ll know later why.

Do you see that table top next to me in this photo? It’s actually a stove! You need two layers of hand protection to keep your hands from burning while sculpting, rolling or by just merely touching the candy mixture. It’s not a joke when I personally held the candy mixture in my hands because aside from it being heavy, it’s really hot!

The candy mixture is initially cooked in a pot before transferring it to the table-top oven that I just mentioned.

Here comes the hot candy mixture!

The Candy Chef will now assign sections for the different colors of the rainbow.

This was actually my most feared part — when the hot candy mixture hit the steel pole!

Okay, we will flatten the colorful mixture then roll them together in 4…3…2…

You’ll just have to keep on rolling until the candy mixture becomes smaller in diameter, elongated and compact.

It’s time to cut them into itsy-bitsy candies!

TADAH! Presenting my Rainbow Mixed Berries Candy!

Using the same candy mixture, we were also able to make some lollipops.

My Sweet Conclusion

It’s NOT easy to make your own candy from scratch! Now, I really appreciate the Candy Chefs of Made In Candy because each candy that we get from their store is really a labor of love. Now that I’ve experienced making my own candy in their kitchen, I promise to savor each piece of MIC in my mouth.
