We’re only a few more weeks away from the start of another school year! Even if we’ve been constantly opening up our wallets to pay our children’s educational needs like the tuition fee, we still feel a sense of fulfillment and joy.
Our hands may be tied with the school fees, we can at least do something to lower the cost of school supplies and materials that our child needs. I enrolled my eldest Noa last week for Grade 1. Upon enrollment, we were given a list of materials that she will be needing when classes start. Today, let me give you some tips on how we can save some few bucks when buying our children’s school supplies
Do a Closet Clean-up.
Visit your drawer, stockroom, desks, and bins in your house. Make an inventory of what school materials/supplies you have at home before hitting the store. You might be surprise because you can find some hidden treasures around. I remember one time, I bought a new box of plastic fasteners only to find an old box inside my daughter’s art box. I could’ve saved money from getting it, only if I had the patience to look around first.

Reuse and Recycle.
Check out the school materials that your child used last year. Chances are, there might be a notebook is barely used, or a filing folder that is in good condition that you can use to store all your child’s artwork. If I may share, we’ve been using the same school-parent link folder for two years now! And we can still use it this year!
Give shopping enough time.
Have you ever experienced shopping in a rush? Did it have a good result? When shopping for anything, may it be grocery or school supplies, if we really allocate enough time for it, we can check and read the fine print of the product. This will allow us to compare the quality and prices. As a result, we are able to choose the best item to put into our cart. One word: Relax!
Keep your eyes open to deals and promotions.
Last week, Noa and I went to SM Stationery inside the SM Store (Department Store) and we were able to see some deals on notebooks. They also have a All-in-One School Pack for as low as Php399!
It was very easy to shop since it is well-lit. You can easily find what you are looking for because they’ve organized the store into categories. I was even surprised to see a Travel, Tech and Home Section aside from the usual office and school supplies.
Use your reward points to save.
If you own rebate cards like the SM Advantage, now is the best time to use them to pay for your children’s school supplies at SM Stationery. Present it upon checkout.
We still feel a sense of fulfillment and joy despite the expenses we incurred this school year because we’ve been given enough strength to work and earn enough to send them to good school. As you all know, even if education is an important right of a child, not all are given this opportunity to go to school. So don’t fret moms and dads, our pockets may be feeling a bit of a pain these days, be glad because our children’s education is an investment.
